If you're a regular around here you probably know that I compete with photographs and albums against other professionals in the area. Well, last night kicked off the competition season. Wow, what a turnout! There had to be 60 entries! They have different categories: Portrait, Social Function, Unclassified, Electronic Imaging, and Storybook. There's also a monthly assignment themed category. Each member can submit a maximum of 6 pieces per competition.
Here's an explanation of the categories:
Portrait--Pretty simple, photos of 1 person or groups of people, normally done under controlled conditions and some are in a studio
Social Function--Any photo taken at a social event, weddings, bar & batmitzvas, parties, etc
Unclassified--Basically, anything that doesn't fit any other category
Electronic Imaging--This is new. You show before and after photos of highly edited images. This one is about Photoshop and other digital skills, not so much the photographs themselves
Storybook--Albums of all kinds, the only rule is they should tell a story.
Assignment--This one is different, it's aimed to students with a different theme every time and they're unmounted 8x10 prints
All the other categories are 16"x20" prints. Electronic Imaging can be 20"x24" prints. So this is pretty serious stuff. Those prints aren't cheap!
Ok, now for the results of last night!
Coming off of last years "big win", I had a major target on my back. It seems everybody wants to beat me now. GOOD! If everybody plays, everybody gets better, that can only help us all! I had to make a good showing to "keep up the rep", you know?
Alright, the suspense is killing me.......
Portrait--3rd Place, I'm ok with this, there were lots of great prints.
Electronic Imaging-3rd Place, this is a totally new category this competition. It was a huge success and again, lots of good images.
Social Function--FIRST AND SECOND PLACE! OK, this is MY category, where my heart is. This is the one I really have to do well in.
So far, not a bad start to the year. Only 9 more competitions to go!
